Lucas Oil Speedway Spotlight: Wettengel knocking on the door in USRA Stock Car, with B-Mod also in hunt

WHEATLAND, MO. (June 5, 2024) - After occasional appearances at Lucas Oil Speedway over the last couple of years, Jaylen Wettengel is going all-in this season. Wettengal is making the three-hour haul from Topeka, Kan., with not only one, but two cars. The fourth-generation racer is leading the O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars points standings after a pair of second-place feature finishes. He's also competing in the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mod class and sit just outside the top 10."It keeps us pretty busy, especially when (the classes) race back to back," Wettengel said of double duty. "But we've been doing it since 2016, so we're pretty seasoned in how to get through it."I try to do as much work as I can at home with tires and set ups and stuff. That way when we get to the track, it's straightforward, in and out. Fortunately, I have a crew guy Scott (Davis) that travels with me, along with my dad (Shane Wettengel) and girlfriend (Tori Turner). They help out quite a bit."Wettengel looks to get over the hump and find victory lane at Lucas Oil Speedway for the first time on Saturday night during Public Service Appreciation Night at the Races. All Police, Fire and Rescue personnel admitted free with ID. The Arctic Food Equipment USRA Modified and special guest class Mod Lites also will be in action in addition to USRA Stock Cars and B-Mods.Motorsports definitely is in Wettengel's blood since birth. The 24-year-old has been racing since the age of five, when he climbed into a quarter-midget and has been driving full-sized cars on dirt since he was 14.Great grandfather Roy Still started racing in 1949 in what Jaylen said was called Modifieds at that time but are known as Sprint cars today. Grandfather Jim Still raced regionally for several years, on dirt and pavement at I-70 Speedway and Lakeside Speedway. Dad Shane Wettengel began racing in 1991."So racing definitely grew on me, growing up around it," said Jaylen Wettengel, who has been doubling up in both Stock Car and B-Mod since 2020."My dad tells me that I might as well do it while I'm young," he said of the demanding schedule. He tries to give the cars equal attention, but said that's often a challenge. The Stock Car is where most of his success has come so far as Wettengel has two feature wins in that class this season at Lakeside Speedway and one at Humboldt."I was able to win first out in the King of America in the Stock Car and that was a good way to start the year," Wettengel said. "Overall, I haven't tore anything up and had some successful finishes, everywhere I've been. This is the best I've ever done at Lucas, with two second-place finishes there. Usually, I'm just cracking the top 10 there is a win in my book."The plan is to race Friday at his "home track" of Lakeside, just west of Kansas City, and commit to Lucas Oil Speedway on Saturday nights."It's mostly because of my Stock Car," he said of committing to Lucas. "That is my more successful car. We've been struggling a little bit in the B-Mod. There's not many Saturday places we can race with the Stock Car. Lucas Oil is a stellar facility. Everywhere else is about two hours out from us and Lucas Oil is only three. We usually bite that extra hour just for the quality of the track and the amazing car count there."Not only is there a full field, but there's probably 10-15 cars in each class that are A Feature-winning type of cars."Wettengel said his primary goal is to win a track championship, at either Lakeside or Lucas."The past four years I've been runner-up in points (at Lakeside) and I really want to get a points championship under my belt," he said. "That's probably my biggest goal, at either one, Lucas or Lakeside. A win at Lucas Oil is one of my next top goals. The crowd and competition there is top level. I consider a win in either class - more than likely it would be the Stock Car - but to get one win at Lucas would be our second goal next to a points championship."He's been close in both attempts this season, finishing right behind Derek Brown and William Garner. Wettengel is nine points ahead of Garner and 12 clear of Brown in the early points battle.Wettengel said he hopes to keep growing his confidence with more track time as the season goes on."I'm not one of those driers that's really good right out of the gate at a new track," Wettengel said. "The more and more I drive at Lucas, I can hopefully get a better feel for how to get around the corners and fine-tune the set-up. Most of the issues I had those two nights of not winning was driver error. If I can clean that stuff up, I think I can wind up on top some time this year."Pit gates at the dirt track open at 4 p.m. with spectator grandstands at 5 p.m., hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:05.Kids Power Wheel Races: Round 3 of Kids' Power Wheel races will be held during intermission Saturday with a 24V-36V class. The races will be held on the front straightaway and the kids' cars can be dropped off at the pit gate and will be brought to the front stretch at intermission.Other Power Wheel races are set for July 27 and Aug. 24.Kids ages 5-12 also can sign up prior to 5 p.m. race day for the RCR Designs Jr. Fan Club for a chance to take part in flagman Mike Striegel's Pit Tour prior to the races, where they can meet drivers and crews. WHEATLAND, MO. (May 4, 2024) - Wesley Smith of Nixa led all 25 laps to capture the POWRi WAR Sprint League feature victory Saturday night, turning a close battle into a runaway late as he beat Jack Wagner by 2.8 seconds. The victory, at the 13th annual Impact Signs Awnings & Wraps Open Wheel Showdown at Lucas Oil Speedway, moved Smith into second place in all-time POWRi WAR wins with 14. Smith is 2-for-2 in 2024, adding to a feature win in the season opener at I-70 Speedway."I think they put some new dirt on this surface and definitely for the better," Smith said of Lucas Oil Speedway. "It's definitely a little tricky. It's not the smoothest or the fastest surface I've ever raced on, but it's one of the funnest. It seems the WAR Series is putting on some great shows."Smith started up front and led the opening lap as Kory Schudy moved into second before a caution flew on lap two. Wagner, of Lone Jack, moved around Schudy for the second spot two laps after the restart. The order remained that way as the laps ticked by with Smith maintaining a quarter-second lead over Wagner. Those two waged a tremendous battle for the lead as the race reached lap 12 when Wagner couldn't quite pull off a slider for the lead. No matter what Wagner tried, Smith was up to the challenge and he was able to use lapped traffic to expand his lead to close out the wire-to-wire victory."Man, that was a fun race," Smith said, noting Wagner's near-pass eight eight laps remaining. "I told him after the race 'if you'd have waited one more corner and one more lap, you'd have passed me.'"Schudy, of Battlefield, Mo., finished third with Keith Martin of Cleburne, Texas, coming home in fourth. In other divisions of the Open Wheel Showdown:Reinbold earns first POWRi Midget League victory: Hayden Reinbold of Chandler, Ariz., dominated from start to finish for his first POWRi National and West Midget league career victory. The 20-year-old Reinbold started on the pole and rolled to the lead in a race slowed by only one early caution. He opened a 2.2-second command over Shannon McQueen by lap nine and maintained consistent laps the rest of the way to lead all 15 circuits.McQueen, of Bakersfield, Calif., held off 15-year-old Gunnar Setser of Columbus, Ind., for the runner-up positions. Broc Elliott of California, Mo., finished fourth."We've been struggling a little bit lately, so we came down here to run POWRi and we had a lot of fun," Reinbold said. "It was a bummer we were rained out last night (at Callaway Raceway) but we were super happy to show that we have some speed."This place is awesome. The facility is nice," Reinbold said of Lucas Oil Speedway. "I've been here once before and I crashed, but I had a lot of fun (tonight). This place is sick."POWRi Ozark Region 360 Sprints: Miles Paulus overtook Randy Martin with three laps remaining and went on to score his first POWRi Ozark Region 360 Sprint feature victory.Paulus, of Marshall, started fourth and gave chase to Martin most of the way before finally reeling him in and making the decisive pass. Paulus wound up beating sixth-starting Gunner Ramey and Paulus at the checkers.Martin sprinted to the lead from the start as Paulus gave chase and had a one-second lead over Paulus 10 laps into the feature. As the race continued under green, Paulus cut the lead to .090 of a second by lap 16.Paulus completed his march to the front by sliding past Martin in turn two on lap 17 with Ramey, from Sedalia, right behind. Once out in front, Paulus pulled away as Martin, of California, Mo., and Ramey went back-and-forth for second. Paulus finished 3.06 seconds in front of Ramey with Martin settling for third."Everybody on the side of this car ... I get to stand here and say that I won, but we won as a team," Paulus said. "I'm very grateful for their support. It's a team effort."LUCAS OIL SPEEDWAY UNOFFICIAL RESULTS (May 4, 2024)13th annual Impact Signs Awnings & Wraps Open Wheel ShowdownPOWRi WAR SprintsTRD Feature - 1. 44-Wesley Smith[1]; 2. 77-Jack Wagner[4]; 3. 28-Kory Schudy[3]; 4. 79-Keith Martin[6]; 5. 73-Samuel Wagner[5]; 6. 21K-Kobe Simpson[7]; 7. 11W-Wyatt Burks[8]; 8. Lucas Oil Speedway Preseason Spotlight: Late Model veteran Walkenhorst ready for 25th year in sport

WHEATLAND, MO. (March 19, 2024) - Joe Walkenhorst will mark a quarter-century driving a race car in 2024 when the Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Model season fires up at Lucas Oil Speedway. All but one of those years spent driving a Late Model. The feeling of wheeling the high-powered car around the dirt is an experience like no other, the 56-year-old resident of nearby Elkton said."Late Models, just the feel of them, when they're really hooked up they feel like they're gonna throw you out the right side of the seat," Walkenhorst said of the appeal. "They are just so quick and fun."Walkenhorst will be looking to build off a strong 2023 season when action in the Big Adventure RV Weekly Racing Series begins next month. He finished fourth in points a year ago with nine top-five finishes in 17 events, though most of his best runs came in the first half of the season."Then I don't know what happened, but something went away on the car," Walkenhorst said. "I don't know if it was a shock or the rear-end. We ended up rebuilding the front end, the rear end, the middle, went through all the shocks. Finally, the last race of the year, we got it to come back."All in all it was decent. Not what we were shooting for, but we got some pretty stiff competition there, too."Walkenhorst, a native of Lee's Summit, began racing in 1999 driving a Super Stock at Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg. He grew up going to the races to watch his dad, Ed Walkenhorst, drive a Late Model at I-70 Speedway in Odesssa."I had to wait until I could afford to race," Walkenhorst said. "That's the biggest obstacle we had to overcome to go racing. But I started racing at Warrensburg in the Super Stock, which was basically a Late Model with a Stock stub, back in the day, and we had success from the git-go. We won four or five races the first year and the next year went to Super Late Models. That was quite a learning curve."Walkenhorst has raced nearly ever year since, though not always with a full schedule due to other commitments. He moved to Elkton, six miles south of Wheatland, a few years ago after his parents retired and bought a place there."My dad decided that living in the city wasn't where he needed to be," Joe Walkenhorst said. "He found a farm in Elkton, just six miles south of the track. I bought three aces right next to them and built a house. I'm an only child and decided I needed to be close to them when they got to the age where they needed help."The only downside is a 230-mile round trip drive each workday to his job in Kansas City. That's why Walkenhorst said it's important to have good help in preparing his car, during the week and on race nights.Tony Allen, a former crewman for national-touring drivers Jason Papich and Earl Pearson Jr., has helped him the last couple of years. Garrett Eth has come on board to help daily maintenance and prep tires. Daughter Mariah Walkenhorst has been another mainstay in helping with crew duties."Tony Allen has been with me last couple of years," Walkenhorst said. "He got tired of going on the road. We've been friends for a while and I told him, 'if you want come wrench for me on Saturday nights I'll buy you a pit pass and a hot dog and you can still get your racing fix and don't have to travel.' He's been great helping me set up the car and make the right adjustments."Garrett Eth is a young kid wanting to learn and I'm getting him started on tires. It's a huge help for me. During the week I'm pretty much by myself and I'm on the road four hours a day. It helps to have a young buck to help out."Walkenhorst said his goals for this season are simple as he plans to race at Lucas Oil Speedway weekly. With the class under POWRi sanction, he also plans to hit some races at the track where he started, in Warrensburg."I definitely want to get a win, if not multiple wins, and beat Justin," Walkenhorst said of Justin Wells, who dominated at the track last season. Joe drives a Black Diamond chassis that he bought from Wells a few years ago."We're good friends and I take my whoppings accordingly," Walkenhorst said of Wells. "He's real good people."The Big Adventure Weekly Racing Series Weekly Opener is set for April 20th with all four divisions in action. The season-opening 3rd annual Easter Bowl Enduro 150 is set for April 6. Hermitage Lumber POWRi Late Models plus POWRi Midwest Mods and POWRi Pure Stocks will be in action that night.Driver information needed: Drivers planning on racing at at Lucas Oil Speedway this season are encouraged by keep their MyRacePass profile up to date. Meanwhile, track announcer Shane Friebe is asking for them to also fill out a driver information form online. There will be a number of nights on both Flo Racing and MAV-TV broadcasts and the more information about each driver, the better.Legends added to April 12th portion of MLRA Spring Nationals: The 11th annual MLRA Spring Nationals are set for April 12-13. Legend cars have been added to the program on the first night to join the MLRA, Show-Me Vintage Racers and POWRi Super Stocks. Classes for night two will be MLRA, SMVR and POWRi Super Stocks.Test and Tunes: The second and final Open Test and Tune is set for 2-6 p.m. March 30 at Lucas Oil Speedway. Pits open at 1 p.m. and pit passes are $30. Grandstand admission is free. For ticket information about any event on the 2024 Lucas Oil Speedway schedule, fans can contact Admissions Director Nichole McMillan at (417) 295-6043 or via email at nmcmillan@lucasoilspeedway.com for more information about any event on the 2024 Lucas Oil Speedway scheduled.CONTACT:Danny LortonLucas Oil Speedway General ManagerOffice: (417) 282-5984 DLorton@lucasoilspeedway.com# # #Complete Lucas Oil Speedway event information, archived race recaps, previews and driver features, along with ticket information and schedules can be found by visiting LucasOilSpeedway.com.Lucas Oil Speedway is located at Highways 83 and 54 in Wheatland, Missouri.
