Sharks are on my mind. The cute darlings of "extreme" TV and videos. There are too many of them right now and they're really affecting saltwater fishing in many areas. It's nice to come home after 9 days on the road and find your record copies of the latest USA Today Hunt & Fish magazine waiting. I'm grateful to have two articles in this year, including this one that examines a brand of dog kennel/crate that is durable enough to last for decades or more. It is seriously heavy duty. Doubly happy that my own Jameson was deemed regal enough to make the pages of this review. It is always a great day when I get to fish with my granddaughter (I know - I don't look that old - haha). Here's a big recommend for Capt Todd Loveday (Todd's Rods) who got us on redfish and flounder (plus some jack crevalle and black drum). We kept a couple chunky, top-of-the-slot (almost 27 inches) reds. That's the historic Castillo de San Marcos behind us. St. Augustine is an all-round destination city. My column today in the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star daily newspaper. First, RIP retired CPO Sgt. Joe Valasek. Second, I try to protect wild turkey hens and create habitat conditions conducive to them raising any poults that hatch. Hatch success with young birds living to adulthood is very low in the wild turkey world. As I explain in the article, I know some of the 12 or so eggs in the ground nest were destroyed by predators, but seeing this hen and 5 poults this morning has me rethinking whether or not she had some success. They were in the field where the nest was discovered. I cut most of the field three days ago. Any insights on the estimated ages of these young birds? Has anyone bought wild, hook/line caught salmon in a store lately? $$$ Not the color-added, antibiotic-pumped "farm-raised" stuff - still $$. Lake Ontario and the greater Niagara Falls area -- with the Niagara River and nearby Lake Erie, is a winning trifecta for anglers. Remember the cartoons of the hunter taking a "bathroom" break only to have that be the precise moment the quarry shows up? Busted! Three hours of comfortable sitting in a low-profile “strutter” chair at daybreak had the jumbo-sized coffee I quaffed during my 30-minute predawn drive desperately wanting out. I was tucked into a thick hedgerow of autumn olive bordering a freshly planted soybean field. Rolling right, I planted my knee and pushed myself upright. After a hasty look around, I moved a few yards away to offload my liquid cargo. Zipping up, I pivoted and – damn, that’s a gobbler across the field, 100 yards away at the wood’s edge. What (piss-poor - pun intended) timing! If I can see him, he can see me. Looking through images of outdoor experiences from the outgoing year always reminds me that, despite occasional setbacks and disappointments - even the difficult losses that life deals everyone, the world can be pretty wondrous.
