US-built pier in Gaza is reconnected after repairs, and aid will flow soon, US Central Command says
A U.S. military-built pier designed to carry aid into Gaza by boat has been reconnected to the beach in the besieged territory after it broke apart in storms and rough seas. U.S. Central Command said Friday food and other supplies will begin flowing in the coming days. The pier section that connects to the beach in Gaza was rebuilt two weeks after heavy storms damaged it and abruptly halted what had already been a troubled delivery route. Central Command says operations at the reconnected pier will be ramped up soon with a goal to get 1 million pounds of food and other supplies moving through the pier into Gaza every two days.

Sale and use of marijuana permitted under ordinance Cherokees in North Carolina approved
The recreational sale and use of marijuana for adults could begin this summer on lands held by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in western North Carolina. The tribal council approved on Thursday an ordinance to allow such transactions and consumption. It comes mere weeks after the tribe's medical marijuana dispensary opened. Tribal members approved a referendum last September for adult recreational sales even as the medical marijuana operation was getting worked out. The ordinance still must be ratified by Principal Chief Michell Hicks to become law. Marijuana possession or use is otherwise illegal in North Carolina, but the tribe can pass its own rules as a sovereign nation.
Appeals court upholds conviction of British national linked to Islamic State
A federal appeals court has upheld the conviction of a British national for his role in a hostage-taking scheme by the Islamic State group that tortured and killed Americans and other westerners a decade ago. El Shafee Elsheikh was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 2022 in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia. His trial established that he was one he was one of the notorious “Beatles,” captors nicknamed for their accents and known for torturing and beating prisoners. Elsheikh argued that confessions he gave in media interviews and admissions he made to FBI agents should have been tossed out of court. But in a ruling Friday, a unanimous three-judge appeals panel in Richmond upheld the conviction.
House explosion in northern Virginia was caused by man igniting gasoline, authorities say
Authorities say a man who died in a house explosion six months ago outside the nation’s capital deliberately detonated gasoline canisters in his basem*nt that caused the blast. Arlington County police in Virginia held a news conference Friday announcing the cause of the explosion. They say officers went to the home of 56-year-old James Yoo on Dec. 4 because he was firing a flare gun from the back of his duplex into a nearby school and park. Officers heard gunshots, and then the house exploded. Officials say that the investigation turned up evidence of paranoia but that they will never know Yoo's specific motive.
