What is the purpose of the praise dance? ›

Praise dance, dance as worship, Christian dance, prophetic dance, or liturgical dance are words that are mostly used interchangeably by many people in the liturgical dance community. It is used for dance as a means to express worship, thanks, or adoration to God, or for telling a story or bringing a Christian message.

What we do: We dance to celebrate, worship, and praise God through the leading of the Holy Spirit. Movement has power to stir the senses and emotions and convey a message that cannot be expressed through words alone, so our ministry interprets selected songs to express God's messages to His people.

In the Bible, Psalms 149:3 says, “Let them praise his name with dancing…Praise him with tambourine and dance…”³ In 2 Samuel 6:14–22, David dances before the Lord with all his might, providing us with a wonderful example of what it truly means to surrender to God in worship.

It's also known as Liturgical, although seemingly no one outside of acedemia really calls it that. It's the idea of mixing dance and worship and has been around in some form or another for likely as long as worship has been a thing.

With these things, we take our place as God's faithful people. Our praise prepares us for a final and ultimate purpose: the promise of reclamation, restoration and redemption; the promise of Jesus. In our distress, no messenger or angel could save us, but only God's presence alone.

Historically, dance was often performed in rituals, worship, social celebrations, and as a means of entertainment and self- expression. Today, dance is still a part of traditional events but also as an element of new innovative performing experiences.

The purpose of praise and worship—as it relates to singing, dancing, and praying—is to create an intimate space between you and the Lord, allowing Him to speak directly to your heart in such a way you are drawn nearer to Him. As a result, He is glorified, and you go deeper into your identity in Him.
