I don't know if it can survive if there is polarization. IN THE LAST decade or so, it probably has been impossible to keep a count on the number of talks blacks and whites have held in searches of an end to what has been perceived as racial polarization in the city. Results, at best, have been inconclusive, possibly because what one man has seen as insensitivity and lack of understanding had been called irrefutable good sense by another. So, given the recent past, why is this a good time to begin another round of talks? Robinson said he believed that white establishment scars that had been caused by the firing of former City Manager William J. Leidinger had healed.

Without mentioning Manuel Deese, Leidinger's successor who had establishment support, Robinson said, "We have shown we have managerial skills." That gave talks a starting point beyond political reality. Robinson suggested that the Crusade should talk with the Teams for Progress, the latest reincarnation of the white establishment's councilmanic election political apparatus. "Dale Wiley," Robinson said, speaking of the Teams chairman, "is a decent understanding ITALKED WITH WILEY after I had spoken with Robinson, and said that if the Crusade wanted to talk, the sooner the better. Wiley said he had been seeing indications of "better response, better communications," between blacks and whites. "We're all here.

We're all going to be here." Robinson had said, "The city can go uphill. If there is not white-black cooperation, it will go downhill. We should look 25...50 years ahead. We must work out pockets of things that are wrong. of my human side, I don't think I have a lack of feeling tor my renowman.

But it's human nature to look out for your own. There are more of you than there are of us. It's unfortunate, but that's why so many of us come out on the short end." What the Crusade wanted to do, Robinson said, is "take the reins" and lengthen that end..
