Louis Deaths Stiff Regulations On Jet Pollution Los Angeles Times-Washington Post Service WASHINGTON The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has warned the airline industry that the government write stiff regulations against pollution from jet engines. The warning was issued Monday.
Last January, Department of Transportation and the Department of Health Education and Welfare forced the airlines to install new "burner cans" in existing JT8D engines to reduce exhaust pollution. The JT8D is the standard engine for Douglas DC9s, and Boeing 737s and 727s. The burners, however, reduce only "visible" exhaust (primarily carbon monoxide), leaving invisible gases (nitrogen oxide) to flow into the atmosphere. Secretary of Transportation John A. Volpe said Monday, "Studies conducted by various agencies indicate that only about 1 per cent of the total air pollution this country may be attributed to aircraft engine emissions." But "further progress" could be obtained if the government set "engine emission standards which are both technically and economically feasible," he said.
The FAA asked for comments on the practicality of adopting such guidelines and on possible standards which could be used in writing the regulations. The deadline is July 1. Spanish-Americans Seeking Formation of a New Nation DENVER (AP)-Young Spanish-Americans from more than a dozen states called Sunday for the formation of a new nation to be called Aztlan. Aztlan is an Indian word that refers to the formerly Mexican land now part of the United States that was inhabited by Mexican-Americans before present U.S. states were formed. About 3,000 persons attended the fiveday second annual Chicano Youth Liberation conference. A spokesman said Aztlan would be concerned with MexicanAmerican influence in the arts, economy, politics and education of the area and not with an attempt to regain the land involved.

Belgians Hold Soviet In SHAPE Spy Plot BRUSSELS (AP) The Belgian criminal investigation police yesterday announced the arrest of a Soviet engineer who they said planned to set up a spy ring inside the Supreme Headquarters of the Allied Powers in Europe. He was identified as Boris Savitch, 35, whose official job was to sell Soviet Scaldia-Volga trucks in Belgium.
Belgium police said he was arrested last week while trying to escape from a restaurant where he was trying to get military information from another person. Savitch's "main long-term aim was to set up a spying network within SHAPE," the police statement said. Robbers Net $117,143 In Argentine Train Holdup ROSARIO, Argentina (AP)-Three men held up a railroad postal car Monand fled with 400,000 new pesos police reported. They said the holdup occurred soon after the train left Rosario, Argentina's second-largest city, for Venado Tuerto. Riding in the car were several employes of the Argentina National Bank with a shipment of cash, guarded by one police officer.
The holdup men overpowered the occupants of the car, took the money and leaped from the train. His versatility also is reflected in the fact that his columns can vary one-day-to-the-next from blistering wit to sober analysis or compassionate concern. He is more provocative than humorous and more informative than entertaining, though he is really all of these things.
