FLIGHTLINE CAFE FIRE.. While thick smoke spilled from the attic, most of the damage to the
popular Flightline Cafe in a fire last Wednesday was kept to the kitchen and attic. Except for a
smoke coating, the building's special painted ceiling tiles escaped damage as did the WWII
Hondo Army Air Field memorabilia The fire apparently started on the stove and spread to the
attic through the vent shaft and was fueled by gas from the water heater in an adjacent closet.
Restaurant Manager Evelyn Herrmann hopes the city, owner of the historic WWII building, will
repair the structure soon so that she can reopen. The restaurant has become a favorite desti-
nation for pilots who like to fly-in for a home-cooked meal, as well as local folks, for 16 years.
