22 years ago, Blizzard Entertainment released Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, changing gaming forever.Developed between 1998 and 2002 by a core team of fewer than 30 people, it launched to universal praise, scoring over 90 on MetaCritic and selling over 3 million copies, plus another million with its Frozen Throne expansion.Characters, locations, and concepts from Warcraft III became central to Blizzard's World of Warcraft, the world's most popular MMORPG, boasting nearly 10 million players by 2009. World of Warcraft was initially developed on a modified Warcraft III engine.Warcraft III's World Editor significantly influenced gaming, especially through the mod Defense of the Ancients (DotA), which created the multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) genre. This led to games like Dota 2, League of Legends, and Honor of Kings, heavily impacting esports. The MOBA industry is projected to exceed $490 million in annual sales by 2025.

Warcraft III is the best game ever created: $39.99, but thousands of hours of fun. It has a clan system, a nice channel system, and people from around the world playing, competing, and sharing. A game within a game. I was a pro player and was ranked in the top 10 on the EUW server ladder. Later, I played Dota and created custom maps.I was 14-15 when I developed my first game using the World Editor. I remember being really fascinated by it. Before that, I created maps on Age of Mythology, which was also astounding. However, the World Editor on Warcraft III was truly game-changing. It was the same editor that the developers of the game used to make game modes and campaigns. I created some game modes on the World Editor that later became huge, such as Castle Defense (Defense of Minas Tirith), some tower defense maps, Castle vs Castle (similar to Clash of Clans war mode), mazes, and many more. This ambitious and creative first generation of level designers/game designers was truely remarkable.Blizzard Entertainment: I would work for free on Warcraft IV, with the same features as Warcraft III but improved. And also, please bring back the old Battle.net

There are people working in that editor to this day... If only more studios would create easy to use editors for generating content. :)

My first job in the industry was a full time QA tester on War3 as an 18 year old kid, fresh out of high school. We had an awesome crew and I think back on those times fondly. From my limited memories, the dev team was remarkably humble. I recall passing along various feedback and suggestions - many of which made it into the shipped game. I even got to make the multiplayer map Duskwood that was put into the 2v2 ladder rotation. These were good times. All said, I still feel deep shame for finishing 2nd place in the internal 2v2 tournament we played part way through development though, haha.

and 20 years later, after blizzard dropped the ball with Warcraft III: Reforged, all the best players (and old legends, such Moon, Grubby, etc) still play it using the community matchmaking platform https://www.w3champions.com/ :)

I miss my main. His name was SmellyWasp. A Wargen Rogue with legendary gear and insane amounts of gold and items. On my last day, I played a game of I Spy where I awarded the winner who found me, all of my gold. Most people thought I was just joking but man, when that rando got my loot… it was like watching lightning strike and I felt like Zeus.

Back in the 90's I associated the Star Wars brand with gaming.Gamers coming of age today may do the same for Marvel Entertainment. It seems like wherever you look in games, you can be sure to find either a game based on or a partnership/collaboration involving Marvel intellectual properties. From Epic Games' Fortnite to dedicated games from NetEase and everything in-between, there seems to be a concerted effort to get Marvel in front of as many gamers as possible, in the form of both multiplayer and single player experiences.Just some examples:Marvel SnapDetails: A digital card collector game that has grown significantly in the mobile gaming space. This list highlights the major Marvel gaming projects and partnerships from 2023, 2024, and beyond, showcasing the diverse range of experiences awaiting Marvel fans in the gaming world.Marvel's Spider-Man 2Developer: Insomniac GamesPlatform: PS5Release Date: October 20, 2023Genre: Open-World, Action-AdventureUpcoming Games (2024 and Beyond)Marvel's Iron ManDeveloper: Motive StudioPlatform: TBCRelease Date: TBCDetails: Single-player, third-person, action-adventure game featuring an original narrative centered on Tony Stark.Marvel's WolverineDeveloper: Insomniac GamesPlatform: PS5Release Date: TBC Details: Fast-paced action game with brutal combat, developed by the team behind Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales.Marvel 1943: Rise of HydraDeveloper: Skydance MediaPlatform: TBCRelease Date: TBC 2025Details: Set during World War 2, featuring Captain America and a WW2-era Black Panther.Marvel's BladeDeveloper: Arkane LyonPlatform: TBCRelease Date: TBCDetails: Mature, single-player, third-person adventure with an original story.Marvel's Black PantherDeveloper: EA Cliffhanger GamesPlatform: TBCRelease Date: TBCDetails: Third-person, single-player game with an original story based on Black Panther.Marvel RivalsDeveloper: NetEase GamesPlatform: PCRelease Date: TBCDetails: Free-to-play, cooperative, Super Hero team-based PVP shooter featuring a wide array of Marvel characters.Gaming PartnershipsDisney and Epic GamesDetails: Collaboration to create an expansive and open games and entertainment universe connected to Fortnite. Official mod support for Cyberpunk 2077 can't come soon enough.CyberMP is in active development by a single modder, with the server being 90% complete. The mod enables multiplayer exploration of Night City. Recent updates include new animations and multiplayer modes like deathmatch.Inspired by FiveM for GTA V, the creator aims to allow users to host and customize servers, create specific experiences (e.g., deathmatch, role-playing, battle royale), and provide a framework for community-driven content.CyberMP is in pre-alpha testing, with regular updates shared on YouTube. While functional, it still has bugs and limitations. As a fan-made, unofficial addition to Cyberpunk 2077, the development timeline and final features of CyberMP may vary. Helldiver’s 2 has lost 90% of its players since launch. For a free to play game, this would be a death knell. Helldivers 2 is not Free to Play. There are over 31k people playing Helldivers II at the time of this writing on Steam alone. The first game's peak CCU was under 7k.31k concurrent players could mean the game these days has over 2 million daily active users, and perhaps over 10 million monthly active users.Considering that the game hasn't had any significant content updates since its release, retaining even 10% of its large peak player base is quite impressive, especially given its soft premium business model. Notably, the game hasn't been discounted or received any major updates either. If it were a free-to-play (F2P) game, the discussion would be entirely different. Some of the most cited issues causing Helldivers II player decline?Content quantity and perceived difficulty. There's insufficient mission variation across objectives, landscapes, side events, and enemy tactics, making the game monotonous unless you're deeply invested in the gameplay. Simply put: There isn’t enough for the players to grind for. Players are maxed out on medals and samples with nothing to do with them. The following could help with retention, as well as bring old and new players in:➤ More Biomes: Diverse environments with varied terrain and topography to influence play styles. Imagine steep, narrow canyons, caves and tunnels, or an archipelago of tall plateaus with zipline objectives.➤ Dynamic Events: Non-objective events like DRG’s Korlocks or Crassus, and helpful mission events like jet boots. More of these are needed to keep missions interesting, and they should be visible on the map.➤ More Mission Types: New biomes and topography can naturally lead to diverse mission types, like using exosuits in canyon maps with bugs crawling down the walls. We should also consider different mission approaches or objectives. For example, with automaton command bunkers, introduce POIs for acquiring mortar emplacements targeting command bunkers, adding a strategic layer.Personally I would love to see a rollback, where the games weapons are all reset to what they were when the game launched, where every weapon seemed overpowered and dare I say more fun.

Mihoyos newest game, Zenless Zone Zero, is officially out.The game feels like a mix between Honkai Star Rail and Genshin Impact.ZZZs focus is on its combat, rather than in an open world like a Genshin Impact.Open world gacha games require almost 10x the time spent playing just running around, which can be great for players who enjoy exploration.I’ve only been able to play for 1.5 hours tonight but I walked away impressed and had trouble turning it off to go to bed. I guess that’s a good sign. The games combat reminds me a lot of Fromsoftwares Sekiro, which is high praise.
