What a gathering of researchers, scientists and industry experts at Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) 2024! Witnessing individuals worldwide exchanging knowledge and insights on #water and #sustainability was both inspiring and humbling. I presented a poster on phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge and met world-renowned Prof Mark van Loosdrecht before the poster session. Despite his hectic schedule, he graciously spared some time for me. SIWW2024 also marked the culmination of the Singapore Water Association (SWA)'s inaugural Young Water Professionals Mentorship Programme. I participated in this six-month-long programme as a mentee and gained valuable insights from water industry experts with decades of experience. It was an opportunity to hone leadership skills, acquire field knowledge and expand the professional network. I am especially thankful to my mentors Dr. Ramakrishna Mallampati, Ph.D, PMP and Ms Cindy Koh for their time and efforts. The mentors and mentees received commemorative medallions for completing this programme during #SIWW2024. Thank you NEWRI Ecosystem for sponsoring my participation in SIWW 2024. Kudos to the winners of various events during the conference! Let's keep the conversation going!

Friend: Does your (brahmin) mother know that you work with sewage sludge?Me: *shocked*Friend: Never mind... *realizes his mistake*Prof Assa Doron and Prof Robin Jeffrey in their remarkable book Waste of a Nation write, "Even for those who never touch a bin or clean a toilet, work associated with garbage brings little prestige and only modest rewards at best". I couldn't imagine that meaningful and relevant work like resource recovery from waste could be prejudiced. Think about the plight of waste handlers who face multi-dimensional deprivations of class, caste, gender, and ethnicity. Ironically, they are sincerely missed if they skip even one day of service. The first and most important step towards solving the wicked problem of waste management is people's attitude towards it.Recently, the Hall of Residences 10 and 11 at Nanyang Technological University Singapore organized the Cleaner's Appreciation Initiative to acknowledge the contributions of cleaners to the well-being of the hall residents. The grateful hall residents gifted goodies and cash coupons to the cleaners and wrote notes of appreciation. It was heartwarming to see the glowing faces of (mostly elderly) cleaners. If you can organize such simple events - great! If not, just smile when you see them around next time ๐ .#wastemanagement be Waste Wise ISWA International Solid Waste Association

The principles of research integrity must be adhered to when using generative AI. Given its evolving nature, the European Research Area Forum has developed important guidelines for researchers, research organizations, and funding organizations for using generative AI. Some of the key pointers for researchers which I learnt from these guidelines:๐ค Human agency and oversight: being aware of the limitations of generative AI, being accountable for the generated data, and scrutinizing it before using it.โ Use AI transparently: declare the tools used (name, version, date, etc), and discuss its limitations and corrective measures undertaken. ๐ Respect privacy, confidentiality, and intellectual property rights: not to upload confidential and sensitive data without prior consent/approval, and understand the implications of doing so.๐ Keep learning and using the best practices for leveraging generative AI: evolve with gen AI!๐ซ Avoid specific tasks: For activities such as peer review, and evaluating research proposals, the generative AI should be used with caution to avoid bias, and unfair treatment. The full document (https://lnkd.in/gvG2fWHy) and one-page summary (https://lnkd.in/gkbArVXX) freely available on the European Commission's website. The guidelines are wonderfully prepared but I wonder why it didn't include the instructions for the publication industry. Maybe they will in future, given that it's a living document!I am glad that Nanyang Technological University Singapore is actively educating its students about responsible use of gen AI. Hope the good practices are adopted worldwide!#researchintegrity, #generativeAI, #ChatGPTP.S.- I didn't use ChatGPT to write this post ๐ ๐

My first post on LinkedIn! Embracing the power of social media ๐To start on a positive note, I am excited to share my latest research on phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge โ a critical step toward sustainable agriculture. Did you know phosphorus is a non-renewable mineral with a skewed geographic distribution, mainly used in fertilizer manufacturing? Our study explored the impact of alum sludge addition to sewage sludge in acidic conditions and subsequent pyrolysis on phosphorus transformation. The goal? Extracting phosphorus without simultaneously extracting heavy metals. ๐ฑ๐กKey findings revealed that sewage sludge amendment with alum sludge and low-temperature pyrolysis (~400ยฐC) were most conducive for phosphorus recovery using wet alkaline extraction. It is a step towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices.Have you ever considered the environmental impact of phosphorus recovery from waste? I'd love to hear your thoughts and start a conversation around sustainable solutions.Huge thanks to Sze Yuet Chin, Prof Teik Thye (T.T.) Lim, Dr Andrei Veksha, Dr Wei Ping Chan, Prof Xunchang Fei, Prof Grzegorz Lisak, and Prof Wen Paul Liu for their invaluable contributions to this research journey! Shout-out to Eunice Wong and Dr Kai Xue for their help in experimentation๐Feel free to check out the full paper (https://lnkd.in/gtD_kw64) and share your insights.#phosphorus #resourcerecovery #sustainableagricultureP.S.- The preprint of this article is freely accessible on my ResearchGate profile (https://lnkd.in/eMrj6Mcn).
