grand finale on riday SUNDAY OCTOBER 11 2015 Real world ways to make society safer 385 5549 Em Coming Monday: Guest columnist Libby itzgerald writes that the pianos of Keys for the Hill City 2015 re about to take their final bow this week in a Marsha Mercer A conundrum: To salt or not? crime will run amok and po lice will not be able to enforce laws and prevent crime This is another left wing lib eral practice that needs to be eliminated Obama blames the GOP and organizations like the NRA for not passing gun safety laws He needs to look at the Democratic Party because they have promoted all of the above politically cor rect libera policies that have restricted and hindered police from doing their jobs When police are prohib ited from doing their jobs by preventing them from or preventing them from entering certain sections of a city it only increases the possibility of mass shootings In addition when colleges Commission on Sports and Physical itness endorsed VAS as HoupW PoiNTs Just recently President Obama said lie was gping to continue to talk abbut gumsafety laws until some thing was done I have some suggestions that he should consider irst tell the left wing mayor of New York City to reinstate the "Stop policy and stop the ridiculous conditions he has attached to the police department Insure that all cities let their respec tive police departments use "Stop the way it was intended Ibis is a valuable and effective tool for police: Then eliminate zones Everyone knows schools are gun free zones and are easy targets for mass shootings Whoever heard of such nonsense anyway? Make it mandatory for all colleges and universities to have sworn armed police departments and not security guards Security guards make me think of an elementary school crossing guard The left wing liberal college boards presidents deans and professors have decided they do not want police on cam pus because of public image and they have disregarded the safety of their students Next stop communities from becoming zones This is the most stupid practice I have ever heard of If police cannot enter a certain section of a citv then only have one security guard armed only with a can of mace protecting a campus of 3000 to 5000 students we will continue to have the shootings as we have had because the deranged thugs will know they can enter the campuses without fear of being stopped arrested or fatally shot Give police back the powers they need to do their jobs ef fectively without provisions or conditions and make colleges have sworn police depart ments These suggestions may prevent future shootings MICHAEL ROACH orest Rowe in Amherst I have known Jeff Rowe a candidate for sheriff of Am 1W would stage what was then known as the State Games ofVirginia The Games became known as the Commonwealth Games in 1992 According to VAS the inaugural Games in 1990 attracted approximately 4400 athletes to Southwest Virginia taking parting in 29 sports The 2015 Games attracted about 9200 ath letes who participated in more than 55 events During the last quarter of a century the Games had a major economic impact in the Roanoke Valley with estimates for the most recent competition at $4 million VAS estimates the total economic impact on the Valley at $54 mil lion as more than 225000 athletes their families and spectators streamed to the Star City Well now the torch has been passed to Lynchburg the Hill City as the new home of the Games corporate office had made the decision to go in a different marketing and branding direction and VAS was in search of a new title sponsor When local governments in the Roanoke Valley balked at contributions to keep the Games VAS President Peter Lampman knew his Roanoke headquartered opening the university dorms and competition venues to the almost 10000 athletes expected to come And the tour ism department and the hospitality industry will be working hand in glove to market Central Virginia to all those come to town next summer for the 2016 events Staging the 2016 Games will be a monumental ef fort especially replicating the volunteer event staff ing network been built up in the Roanoke Valley But the city and LU have proven with the suc cessful staging of the VHSL state championships and the association all star games that more than up to the chal lenge The 2016 Games will be a moment for everyone in Lynchburg to shine the city LU the outstanding hospitality industry everyone And something that have been pulled off with out all working together heist County for more than 40 years He loves his family and those who live in Amherst County He is a man of honor and integrity a man who means what he says He has served his country in both the active duty Air orce and in the Army National Guard Locally he has served with the Amherst County Office the Amherst Town Police and both the Amherst and Monelison volunteer fire departments He has thoroughly consid ered his goals for the office He wants to create a more employee friendly atmo sphere in order to retain seasoned officers and attract qualified applicants He wants to concentrate on community policing and crime prevention and solu tion while decreasing the emphasis on traffic enforce ment which is used solely as a means to generate revenue (which seems to be the case at present) i All three of the candidates are good men but I support Rowe in his bid to become Amherst County sheriff and I hope that you will also DUVAL DOSS Madison Heights Editor's note: Doss is a retired captain of investiga tions for the Amherst County The federal government is about to write new nutritional guidelines aimed at keeping Americans healthy Whole milk soon may be back in our good graces along with eggs and even salt Unless they re not No wonder people are con fused and peeved if not angry The last thing anyone wants in nutrition rules is uncer tainty Why waste precious time deciding whether to buy a can of chicken noodle soup based on its milligrams of sodium if thp science now savs sodium is not a big deal? Our knowledge of nutrition and health is constantly changing a A headline on the front page of Washington Post read: thinning case that fat causes heart ills New studies vindicate whole milk as dietary advice is Uh oh been told for decades to substitute low and non fat milk for whole milk to pre vent heart disease and other health problems It turns out that whole milk may contribute less to heart trouble than the low fat foods loaded with refined grains and sugar that we substitute for it In other words cookies and cakes even the low fat variety are no solution Researchers found that people who included more milk fat in their diets actually suffered lower levels of heart disease than those who consumed less And no the studies were not paid for by the dairy industry Cholesterol also the problem we once thought so eggs red meat and shrimp may no longer set off alarm sirens We eat too much salt but it may not be the culprit it seemed And on top of all that one study found that breakfast may not be the most important meal of the day Naturally people are frustrated tempting to throw federal Dietary Guidelines out with the skim milk may be losing confidence in the Rep Collin Peterson Minn said Wednesday at a House Agriculture com mittee hearing adding that many of his con stituents believe this stuff anymore the skepticism we should maybe reconsider why we are doing Peterson continued We are doing this because Congress in 1990 required that federal dietary guidelines be issued at least every five years The guidelines set policy for everything from school lunches and other federal food programs to advice to individuals about what to eat to prevent' such chronic conditionsas heart disease high blood pressure Type 2 diabetes cancer and obesity ty Dietary Guidelines 20 1 5 are due to be re leased bythe end of the year An independent advisory panel helping the departments of Health and Human Services and Agriculture prepare the 2015 guidelines issued a report with several controversial rec ommendations During the public comment period about 29000 comments were submit ted vastly more than five years ago Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and HHS Secretaiy Sylvia Burwell said the report is not a draft of the new rules which have not yet been written In a blog post this week previewing the new guidelines Vilsack and Burwell said the new rules will look a lot like the old ruits and vegetables low fat dairy whole grains and lean meats and other proteins and limited amounts of saturated fats added sugars and sodium remain the building blocks of a healthy they said TWo recommendations by the advisory committee are definitely out There will be no sustainability goals and ho tax on sugary soft drinks Vilsack and Burwell said Sustainability refers to the environmental impact of food production Meat arid other producers that require a lot of water lobbied heavily against including sustainability in the guidelines Soft drink companies rallied against the tax Critics still will complain that the federal government tell us what to eat Republicans criticize the as vo ciferously as health advocates complain about subsidies to sugar and corn So what should you do if fed up with (lie changing recommenda tions about good nutrition?
