Season opens tomorrow in state Only the Pilgrims had it better. The Massachusetts fall turkey season opens tomorrow to the healthiest American wild turkey flock since our forefathers blunderbussed them after setting slipper on Plymouth Rock in 1620. While beaucoup birds are being spotted throughout the state and are at an all-time high since big bird was All outdoors Frank Sousa wiped out in the Bay State nearly a century ago, and flocks of up to 80 birds have been counted, we have a long way to go to match the 1600s, mostly because we just do not have the land.

Early Pilgrim and Indian reports were to the effect that giant flocks took up to an hour or two to pass by, thousands of birds together. Early efforts here to bring big bird back saw a plant of wild turkeys mixed with domestics, and while the early stockings survived they failed to have offspring. Enter wild birds of both genders brought in from Pennsylvania and New York, direct descendants of our original American wild turkey and voila! Poultry aplenty. The autumn hunt is by permit only, and male or female may be shot. The fall season is entirely different from the spring toms-only hunt when the boy birds are answering a call of the wild not yelped in a year.

And come a running when the season of being "in season" is here. The males' mating game makes them an easier game for big bird hunters pretending to be hens via a variety of calls. The fall hunt calls for finding a flock, breaking it up. Then bringing in a bird with an assembly call, or a kee-kee-run, if you have mustered the ability to make this call, the most difficult in the call repertoire. This call, if mis-tooted, can not only send a wary bird winging, but it can give the caller gas.

So beware. The fall hunt is an all-day affair, ending a half hour after sunset. You cannot drive flocks for each oth- not hunt the fall. HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH: You do not usually think of fishing as being a hazardous sport or even carrying risks beyond a hook in the finger. Think again.

St Sig Santana, a mate aboard the charter boat Mercedes, and a giant of a man who had been in on the landing of hundreds of sail fish, was preparing to gaff a 700-pound blue marlin after a five-hour fight when a piece of the 500-pound test mono leader hooked in his glove. And pulled him overboard. Santana's son Dominick leaped into the ocean and tried to free him, but he did not have a knife and passed out as the marlin tugged his father under. Usually, mates wear a small razor around their neck in case they get caught up in line. Santana's body was discovered a short while later.

His son was taken aboard and revived. You never know when the unexpected will happen. I was fishing Cape Cod waters when I shut off my inboard-outboard and was lowering a small outboard trolling motor into the ocean when my shirt got caught in the hinged platform the motor was mounted on. It pulled my face within inches of the water, and I went under every time the boat dipped or a wave rode up the fantail. But I'm a big believer in carrying a knife.

Especially when on or under the water, in fact I wear two er. Shot size is restricted to number 4 and 6 shot, 10 gauge or smaller shotguns only, or bows 40 pounds pull or greater. Anyway, after swallowing half the ocean and twisting my body around to say goodbye to my butt.

I managed to cut my shirt off. It was the day that I discovered how much you can sweat even when your face is bobbing for apples in ice water. MORE HAZARDS: Poaching fishermen, at least off Somalia, face certain hazards the run-of-the-mill poachers do not face. The skipper of a Taiwanese longliner was arrested for taking too high a percentage of shark bycatch and fishing within a 25-mile limit, according to International Game Fish Association. The court sentenced him to a $3 million fine not a misprint and amputation of a foot and a hand, again, not a misprint.

The latter penalty certainly would be double jeopardy if you liked to dance to "YMCA" at weddings. After a long and costly negotiation the skipper's limbs were spared, most likely so he could pay the fine. FLIP A BIRD: Dick Bombardier of The autumn hunt is by permit only, and male or female may be Granby was fishing for striped bass on a breakwater with his son Rick when a seagull made his day: They hadn't taken a striper, and Dick was down to his last herring when his cast was carried into the rocks and his terminal gear was hung up. not for long. A seagull grabbed the herring and flew off.

Apparently feeling the tug of the line made the bird release Dick's bait, and it plunged into the ocean. Where, of course, it was immediately grabbed by a bass. 10 DEATH DO US: Had to love this T-shirt worn by Rene Lariviere, that little old wild grape wine maker.
